Sizing follows your annual usage; roof area only sets the ceiling. New Hampshire gets 4.82 peak sun hours a day, and each installed kilowatt produces 1,319 kilowatt-hours a year here. An average home using 619 kilowatt-hours a month needs 5.63 kilowatts to cover a full year, which is the basis for the $17,064 figure. That yearly figure already folds in New Hampshire’s seasons: long summer days carry most of the production, winter yield drops while snow sits on the panels, and a larger array is the common way to cover a heating-season shortfall.

That per-watt price is not all panels. It bundles the modules and inverter, mounting hardware rated for New Hampshire snow, the electrician’s labor, permitting and interconnection paperwork, and the installer’s overhead and warranty. Equipment is a shrinking share of the total, and labor and soft costs are what separate one New Hampshire quote from another.

What Battery Storage Adds to the Price

A battery is the largest single line item after the panels. Residential storage installs for $1,000 to $1,300 per kilowatt-hour in New Hampshire, so a common 13.5-kilowatt-hour battery adds $13,500 to $17,550 to the project. The table above uses the lower end.

In New Hampshire a battery earns its place on backup power during outages more than on bill savings. The state’s export credit sits close to the retail rate, so storing energy to dodge a higher rate later returns little. What you pay turns on how much you back up: a single essentials battery of 13.5 kilowatt-hours carries a well pump, refrigerator, and lights through a storm, while whole-home backup means stacking two or more and pushing storage past $27,000. Whether storage earns its price depends on your outage risk and the longer payback math.

Why New Hampshire Solar Costs What It Does

Equipment is only part of a quote. Several local conditions move the installed price, some up and some down.

Snow Load, Travel, and Labor Push Prices Up

Racking in New Hampshire has to carry winter snow. Roofs here need steeper tilt and mounts engineered for the heavy ground snow loads common across the state, heaviest in the North Country. That structural work is absent from warmer markets, and it shows up in both hardware and engineering time.

Rural travel. Crews serving northern and western towns drive long distances to a job site, and that time lands in the labor line of the quote.

Older housing stock. Many New Hampshire homes predate modern wiring. An aging electrical panel may need an upgrade to 200 amps before a system can connect, and that work sits outside a headline per-watt price.

A tight labor market. Licensed electricians are in short supply across northern New England, and that scarcity keeps installation rates firm.

Town-by-town permitting. New Hampshire has no statewide permitting standard and little SolarAPP+ adoption, so each town runs its own process. A project takes two to four months from contract to permission to operate, and the paperwork friction is a soft cost installers build into the quote. Larger all-electric systems can trigger a longer utility interconnection review.

New Hampshire’s Missing Sales Tax Pulls the Price Down

New Hampshire charges no state sales tax, so solar equipment is untaxed at the point of sale. A buyer in Massachusetts or Vermont pays sales tax on the same panels and inverters; a New Hampshire buyer does not, which removes a cost neighboring states carry.

The southern half of the state also has a dense installer field. Competition among firms in the Manchester and Nashua corridor holds quotes down for homeowners who collect more than one bid.

The Credits and Rebates That Vanished in 2026

Two subsidies that used to lower a New Hampshire solar price are gone. Their absence is the reason the gross price and the net price are the same number here.

The federal residential credit, Section 25D, paid 30% of a system’s cost for years. Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, it pays nothing on any owned system placed in service after December 31, 2025. A cash or loan buyer in 2026 has no federal credit to claim.

New Hampshire never had much to add on top. The state has no income tax, so a state solar tax credit is structurally impossible, and the one cash rebate that existed, worth $0.20 a watt up to $1,000, was permanently closed when Senate Bill 303 repealed it in 2024.

That $17,064 gross price is what you pay. What the state offers instead is a local property-tax exemption in many towns and a high, locked export credit, both detailed in New Hampshire’s solar incentives. The property-tax exemption is a local option that applies only where your town has adopted it, and it keeps the home-value bump from solar off your assessed value. Neither measure cuts the check you write the installer; they protect the value of a system over its life.

What You Pay Out of Pocket and What Solar Can’t Erase

With no credit or rebate, your out-of-pocket cost is the full system price. Against New Hampshire’s rates, which have climbed 3.14% a year over the past five years, that money comes back over time, and two facts keep the picture honest.

Solar offsets the energy portion of your bill while leaving the fixed monthly customer charge in place. A system that zeroes your usage still leaves that charge, which runs from $14.74 a month at Liberty Utilities to $29.00 at the New Hampshire Electric Co-op. If you buy your supply through a Community Power program, solar still offsets that supply the same way, since the utility sets your net-metering credit regardless of who supplies your power.

Export credits, though high, are not a one-to-one retail credit. New Hampshire’s net-metering tariff pays surplus power at 100% of energy and transmission plus 25% of distribution, which works out to 80 to 85% of the retail rate at the three investor-owned utilities and is guaranteed through 2040. That is a long window of certainty at a time when other states are trimming export rates.

How to Pay for Solar in New Hampshire in 2026

Losing the federal credit changed how New Hampshire buyers finance a system.

Cash gives the strongest long-term return. You own the system, keep the full net-metering value, and carry no financing fees on top of the hardware.

A home-equity loan or HELOC can be the cheapest way to borrow, since it avoids the dealer fee baked into many solar loans. You own the system outright and keep the full net-metering value.

Solar loans are widely available, but read the price closely. Many zero-down loans fold a dealer fee into the principal, so the financed price runs higher than the cash price for the same hardware. That dealer markup is a large part of why national transacted medians sit above a competitive New Hampshire cash quote. Confirm the monthly loan payment beats your current electric bill before you sign.

Leases and PPAs are both legal in New Hampshire, and in 2026 they are the only way to reach a federal credit at all. The system’s owner claims the commercial Section 48E credit and prices some of it into your rate; you never file for it yourself. One timing note: the deadline to begin construction under the current terms passed on July 4, 2026, so new third-party offers must reach service by the end of 2027 to qualify. Group net metering. New Hampshire lets several accounts share the output of one system, so households whose own roofs cannot host panels can still buy into a local project and receive bill credits. It is a smaller market than rooftop ownership, and the credit terms follow the same utility tariff.

When Solar Doesn’t Pay Off in New Hampshire

Solar fits most New Hampshire roofs. A few situations are the exceptions.

An aging roof. Panels on a roof with fewer than 12 to 15 years left mean paying to remove and reinstall them at re-roof time, which adds $1,500 to $5,000 the panel warranty will not cover. Replace the roof first, then go solar. Standing-seam metal roofs, common in northern New Hampshire, are the friendliest surface for a clamp-on mount and add the least labor.

Heavy shading. A roof that loses more than a quarter of its sunlight to trees or dormers stretches payback past the point where the system pays for itself.

A low-usage co-op account. The New Hampshire Electric Co-op credits exports at 13.76¢ a kilowatt-hour, 62% of its retail rate, and charges $29 a month, the highest fixed charge in the state. A low-usage co-op member sees the weakest economics in New Hampshire, though a sound, unshaded roof still recovers its cost inside the panels’ warranted life.

A short stay. Cumulative savings first pass the system cost between year 9 and year 12, depending on your utility. If you expect to move sooner, a lease or PPA that transfers to the next owner is the better call.

No roof of your own. Renters and most condo owners cannot install a rooftop system, and New Hampshire has no plug-in balcony-solar allowance yet. Group net metering is the practical option for these households.

What to Ask a New Hampshire Solar Installer

New Hampshire licenses the electrical work but has no separate solar trade license, so vetting the firm matters. Before signing, ask:

  • Who pulls the electrical permit? The state requires a licensed master electrician for any work at 30 volts or higher, through the Electricians’ Board under RSA 319-C. Confirm the company holds an active New Hampshire license.
  • Is the racking engineered for our snow load? Ask for the design snow load and the tilt plan that sheds it.
  • How long is the town permit taking? New Hampshire has no statewide solar permitting standard, so timelines run town by town. A local installer knows your municipality’s queue.
  • Are your installers NABCEP-certified? It is the voluntary industry credential and a fair proxy for competence.
  • Who honors the workmanship warranty? Several national installers have failed in the past two years, stranding their customers. A stable local firm can be worth more than a longer paper warranty.
  • Is the price fixed, and is the production estimate in writing? A firm quote and a written first-year production number let you hold the installer to what they sold, and they make competing bids comparable line for line.
